MHT CET (MH CET) or Maharashtra Common Entrance Test is conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Mumbai for admissions to first-year Engineering and Technology programmes (BE/BTech) and Pharmacy programmes (BPharma/PharmaD) in the state. Till 2018, the exam used to be conducted by DTE, Maharashtra.

In 2013, the exam was scrapped and the admission to undergraduate engineering programmes (BE/BTech) was done on the basis of JEE Main. However, from 2016 onwards, the exam was started again after which the government assigned 50% weightage to Class 12 marks and 50% to CET scores, instead. From 2018, MHT CET was mandatory for admissions in the state.

Candidates will be allotted seats in the different colleges of Maharashtra on the basis of candidates’ results in MHT CET 2021. It is one of the largest exams in terms of test-takers in India as around three lakh applicants appear in MHT CET every year. MHT CET is considered a relatively moderate exam to attempt.

Pattern of Exam:

Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test Cell has released the official MHT CET Syllabus 2021 along with the marking scheme. Each paper will carry 100 marks each with no negative marking. 2 marks will be awarded for every correct answer in mathematics paper and 1 mark in other papers. According to MHT CET 2021 Exam Pattern, the exam will be held as a three-hour computer-based test. MHT CET 2021 will have three question papers: Paper 1 (Mathematics), Paper 2 (Physics & Chemistry) and Paper 3 (Biology) with Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

MHT CET 2021 Eligibility

The MHT CET 2021 eligibility is yet to be announced by the exam conducting authority. It is expected that the eligibility criteria for MHT CET will be announced along with the application form. Candidates aspiring for MHTCET 2021 can refer to the eligibility criteria (as per the last year) below:

All the candidates who have passed/appearing at the qualifying examination i.e. HSC/12th Standard or its equivalent and having Indian Nationality are eligible to appear for MHT CET 2021. There is no age limit for admission and appearing to MHT-CET 2021.

Candidature Type

Maharashtra State Candidature

A Candidate can claim only one type of Maharashtra State Candidature i.e. from Type A to E.

Type Eligibility Criterion
Type-A (i) Candidates passing SSC and also HSC or Diploma in Engineering or Bachelor of Science Examination from a recognized institution in Maharashtra State

(ii) Candidate who is either Domicile of Maharashtra and/ or is born in Maharashtra;

Type-B A Candidate who does not fall in Type-A above, but who or whose Father or Mother is domiciled in the State of Maharashtra and possess Domicile Certificate.
Type-C A Candidate who does not fall in either Type-A or Type-B but whose Father or Mother is an employee of the Government of India or Government of India Undertaking and who has been posted and reported to duty in Maharashtra State before the last date for submission of Application Form for CAP.
Type-D A Candidate who does not fall in any of the above Type-A, Type B and Type-C but whose Father or Mother is an employee or retired employee of the Government of Maharashtra or Government of Maharashtra Undertaking.
Type-E Candidates passing SSC and/or HSC Examination from a recognised institution located in a disputed Maharashtra Karnataka Border Area and whose Mother tongue is Marathi.

All India Candidature

The Candidates having Indian Nationality are eligible under this category.

Minority Candidature

The Candidate belonging to a particular Linguistic or Religious Minority Community from the State of Maharashtra and as notified by the Government are eligible under this category.

Children of NRI / OCI / PIO, Children of Indian workers in the Gulf countries, Foreign National

These types of Candidature Candidates are exempted from appearing for MHT CET 2021.

Note: (a) It is mandatory to appear for MHT CET 2021 for candidates belonging to Maharashtra State Candidature, Minority Candidature seeking admission to BE/BTech. However, All India Candidature candidates may or may not appear for MHT CET 2021 as Score of JEE (Main) shall be preferred over MHT CET 2021 for admission to BE/BTech.

(b) It is mandatory to appear for MHT CET 2021 for candidates belonging to Maharashtra State Candidature, Minority Candidature All India Candidature seeking admission to BPharm/ PharmD

Jammu and Kashmir Migrant Candidature

  • The children of citizens, who are displaced from Jammu and Kashmir to any part of India or from unsafe border area of Jammu and Kashmir to a relatively safer place in Jammu and Kashmir from 1990 onwards due to terrorist activities
  • The children of officers belonging to Indian Administrative Services (IAS) or Indian Police Services (IPS) or Indian Foreign Services (IFS) and children of staff belonging to military and paramilitary forces transferred to Jammu and Kashmir to combat terrorist activities and joined the post on or before the last date for submission of application for admission; or
  • The children of staff and officers of Jammu and Kashmir police engaged in combating terrorism are eligible under this category.

  3. What is the duration of MHT CET exam?
  4. The total duration of MHT CET is 180 min, the exam is held in two parts consisting of paper 1 and paper 2. Each paper is 90 min long.
