Top 10 Engineering Colleges in India

There are nearly 4,200 engineering colleges in India that offer BTech courses, out of these nearly 2,100 colleges are private, nearly 450 are government and the rest are public-private colleges. The most common and important question that arises in the minds of JEE or engineering aspirants is ‘Which colleges should I target?’

While IITs remain the most sought-after choice of the students, it may happen that you might not get a seat or your preferred seat in IIT or you want to have more options for choosing the perfect college.

In this article, we have listed the top 10 engineering colleges in India, their admission process and also the names of the students of Pune who made it to these colleges

  1. IITs- Indian Institute of Technology

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public technical and research institutes located across India. It is under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Education, Government of India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as Institutes of National Importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes. Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council (IIT Council), which oversees their administration. The Minister of Education is the ex officio Chairperson of the IIT Council. As of 2021, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IITs is 16,234.

The IITs are best known for offering world-class undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programmes. Some of the popular engineering programmes offered by IITs include Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. However, besides engineering, some of the IITs also offer other programmes in Design and Business Management.

 Admission Process

The first step for getting into any IIT is the JEE Mains. This year in 2022, you can appear for JEE Mains twice. Also, you can appear in JEE Main in 3 consecutive years from the year of passing your class 12 exam. NTA has not mandated any criteria for age appearing for the JEE Main. There will be no negative marking for optional questions.

The top performers of JEE Main, around 150,000 of the candidates, will be shortlisted for giving JEE Advanced.

 Admission to Engineering Course

If you want admission to any Engineering stream, then you will have to appear for the paper for B.E./B.Tech. You will have to take this paper only through CBT (Computer Based Test) mode. This paper consists of objective type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and questions for which the answer is a numerical value. This paper is set on 3 subjects – Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with equal weightage to each subject. Total marks are 300.

Admission to Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) Course

If you want admission to Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) course, then you will have to appear for the entrance in 3 parts. Part I (Mathematics) and Part II (Aptitude Test) will be conducted through CBT (Computer Based Test) mode. While Part I has objective type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and questions for which the answer is a numerical value, Part II has Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) only. Total marks in Part I and II are 400. But, Part III will be conducted through pen & paper mode on drawing sheets. Part III has questions to test drawing aptitude.

The top performers of JEE Main, around 150,000 of the candidates, will be shortlisted for giving JEE Advanced.

After appearing for JEE Advanced, the next step is to appear for Joint Seat Allocation Authority ( JoSAA) counselling. The authority manages and regulates the joint seat allocation for admissions to 23 IITs, 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 23 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and 23 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). Admissions to all the BTech programmes offered at IITs are done through this single-counselling platform.

  1. At least 75% aggregate marks in Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination or equivalent grades.
  2. Be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in the respective Class 12th Board examination of a particular year. These category-wise top-20 percentile cut-off score lists are obviously announced every year after the JEE Advanced exam is over and all Board results are out.

The marks scored in the following 5 subjects will be considered for calculating both the Class 12th aggregate marks as well as the cut-off marks of top 20 percentile

  1. Physics
  2. Chemistry
  3. Mathematics
  4. A language (if you have taken more than 1 language, then the language in which you have scored higher will be considered)
  5. Any subject besides the above 4 (the subject in which you have scored the highest marks will be considered)

Admission Criteria for admission to B.Arch. programs

  1. Only available at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Roorkee
  2. You will have to pass in the Architecture Aptitude Test.
  3. There is no separate ranking in the AAT.
  4. Allotment of seats will be solely based on the category-wise All India Rank in the JEE (Advanced) 2020 and B. Arch. program will be offered only to those candidates declared PASS in the AAT.
